The Melanesian
Agricultural Information System
(MAIS) is a three-country initiative to
provide access to bibliographic and non-bibliographic
information about research and development in
the agriculture
sector in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands
and Vanuatu. The scope of the databases is not
restricted to just agriculture, but also
includes, by request of partner organisations,
information on forestry, fisheries
and the environment.
As this web site
is a 'work in progress', there is access only
to the bibliographic database. However, this
database contains over 37,000 records, with
the majority of them about agriculture and
natural resources in Melanesia. The database
also indicates which partner library holds a
hard copy of a publication. Where the
copyright issue is resolved, there is online
access to a digital copy of the publication.

Work is
ongoing to enter data and information about research and
development projects in Melanesia,
and the organisations and people involved.
This 'non-bliographic' information will answer
questions such as who is doing what, where,
how and why. As such, it will be a
vital communication tool between R&D
organisations in the three countries. This
work is funded under the NARI–EU–ACP
Science and Technology Programme.
